Donny war aus Indien nach Deutschland gekommen. Der ganze Prozess war kompliziert, und Donny und ich sind sehr dankbar für die große Unterstützung für "ProjectUniteDonnyAmrita", die wir in Indien und Deutschland bekommen haben.
Als Donny endlich bei mir in Hamburg war, habe ich mir gedacht, dass ich ihn gerettet habe. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, hat er mich gerettet.
Ich hatte eine sehr anspruschvolle Position als Präsidentin eines Forschungsinstituts und als Professorin angenommen, und bin dafür nach Deutschland gekommen. Ich kannte nur wenige Leute hier, und ich hatte ein sehr erfolgreiches und frohes Leben in Cambridge (Großbritannien) aufgegeben. Aber mit Donny an meiner Seite, war nichts anderes wichtig. Wir waren zwei Zuwanderer, in einem fremden Land – aber alles war okay, weil wir einander hatten.
Donny hat mir geholfen, die größten Arbeitsherausforderungen zu meistern. Wenn ich die ganze Nacht arbeiten musste (das war sehr oft der Fall, weil es für mich zusätztlich zu meinem „Day-Job“ notwendig war, sehr aktiv als Wissenschaftlerin und Autorin zu sein), war Donny immer mein zuverlässiger Begleiter. Wenn ich müde war, hat er das bemerkt und bot mir viele lustige Mitternachtsspiele an; dann fühlte ich mich wieder erholt. Manchmal schlief ich beim Lesen ein; ich wachte auf und stellte fest, dass er mich mit seiner Decke zugedeckt hatte, um mich warm zu halten. Wenn ich krank war, saß er zu meinen Füßen und seufzte leise aus Mitleid. Wenn ich von Geschäftsreisen nach Hause kam, versuchte er mir meinen Koffer hineinzutragen; da dieser zu schwer war, lief er zurück und brachte mir seine Leckereien als Willkommensgeschenk.
Er hat selten gebellt – nur ein oder zweimal pro Jahr. Aber er hatte andere Arten der Vokalisierung und Kommunikation. Er hat oft versucht, menschlische Sprache zu imitieren. Und er hatte auch sehr besondere Laute, die für mich reserviert waren, z.B. die Freudenrufe, wenn er mich vom Fenster beobachtet hatte, und sah, dass ich nach Hause kam. Unglaublich war sein großartiges Talent zum Singen. Wenn meine Mutter mir klassische indische Lieder beigebracht hat, war Donny ein perfekter Schüler: mit einer sehr ernsten Miene summte er – tatsächlich – richtig – die Melodie. Aber dann war es unmöglich für uns, nicht zu lachen!
So intelligent und einfühlsam war Donny, dass meine Mutter als erste entschieden hat, dass wir ihn nicht rumkommandieren sollten (entgegen des Rats der Trainerin), sondern versuchen würden, ihm besser zuzuhören und zu verstehen. Mein Vater und ich waren bald von dieser Strategie überzeugt und haben sie auch umgesetzt. Donny belohnte unseren Respekt für ihn mit unendlicher Liebe, Dankbarkeit und charmantem Verhalten.
Er war außergewöhnlich höflich und freundlich. Er machte keine Unterschiede zwischen Arten und hat immer versucht, allen zu helfen (z.B. hat er einen Igel gerettet). Und nicht nur das, er war fast wie ein Assistenzhund: hat er doch vielen, die sonst Angst vor Hunden hatten, geholfen ihre Furcht zu überwinden. Seine Sanftheit sollte jedoch nicht mit mangelndem Mut verwechselt werden. Wenn er das Gefühl hatte, dass seine Familie bedroht wurde, stieß er ein tiefes Knurren aus - das reichte in der Regel aus, um die Böswilligen fernzuhalten.
Beim Essen war er sehr wählerisch. Als Welpe und in seinen ersten Lebensjahren hatte er kaum zu essen und ist fast verhungert. Vielleicht hatte er aufgrund dieser schlechten Erfahrungen beschlossen, dass er kein Interesse an Lebensmitteln hatte. Aber zusammen, Schritt für Schritt, haben Donny und ich diese Situation verbessert. Ich hatte festgestellt, dass er aß, wenn ich ihn mit der Hand oder mit einem Löffel fütterte. Und auch von mir mit Liedern und Geschichten begleitet, wollte er fressen. Das habe ich bereitwillig und von Herzen getan. Seine Mahlzeiten wurden für uns beide zu den besten Momenten des Tages.
Don war wirklich hübsch – aber seine Schönheit war ungewöhnlich. Auf unseren Spaziergängen machten die Leute Bemerkungen, „ein ganz schöner Hund“. Selbst als er schon vierzehn Jahre alt war, haben uns Leute auf der Straße gefragt: dieser junger Hund ist noch nicht zwei, oder?“. Sein Gang war sehr elegant – ein „Pony-Walk“. Er war sich all dieser Bewunderung nicht bewusst. Und doch hielt er den Kopf hoch und streckte den Schwanz nach oben, denn er war so stolz darauf, mit seiner Familie spazieren zu gehen.
Mein kleiner, guter, schöner, süßer Hund (dieser Satz war der Erste, den ich auf Deutsch gelernt habe) - mein perfekter Hund - hat mir Vieles beigebracht. Ich war immer eine Tierfreundin, aber er lehrte mich viel über Würde, die über Arten hinausgeht. Als lebendes Beispiel voller Güte, hat er meine Weltanschauung und meine Forschungsagenda transformiert.
Donny ist friedlich an Altersschwäche verstorben. Die Tierärztin und andere Wohlmeinende versuchen uns zu trösten: er wurde 14 Jahre alt, das ist in Menschenjahren fast 100. Selbst am Tag seines Todes glänzte sein rot-goldenes Fell und er hatte noch perfekte Zähne. Bis zum letzten Tag fand er noch neue Wege, uns zum Lächeln zu bringen.
Mein Schmerz über seinen Tod ist grenzenlos. Aber selbst inmitten dieser Trauer muss ich die unendliche Freude erkennen, die er mir und vielen anderen gebracht hat. Für all das und noch mehr, bin ich sehr dankbar. Und ich glaube auch, dass man für immer vereint und untrennbar bleibt, wenn man eine so tiefe Verbindung mit einem anderen Wesen hat.
Donny Bhawalkar Narlikar war nicht „nur“ unserer Lieblingshaustier und geschätztes Familienmitglied. Er war mein bester Freund. Und wird es immer sein.

29 September will always be a special day: two of my favourite beings share this birthday, albeit 101 years apart. My first best friend, my grandpa (Ajoba) Prof. Devidas Raghunath Bhawalkar, and my bestest ever friend BFF Seelenhund Don Bhawalkar Narlikar. Although over a year without Donny physically by my side seems most unfair, I hope and believe that our best friends always stay with us - and so I hope to somehow manage in this life with him watching over me, and look forward to the after-life and future lives together with him. Alas 8 August is coming upon us and it is very difficult, dearest Donny, not to think back on this week last year.
You slowed down, and yet looked more handsome than ever. Always maintaining the sweetness of your temper, always finding new ways to play together, always giving me new reasons to laugh.
You did not want to eat - and to please me, you still would, showing such joy in the different dishes we would cook for our best boy.
You would look longingly at the stairs that you had so often sped up and down on over the years, and then turned around to wait for me, wagging your tail and asking me to hurry up. At this time, last year, we were having to take the elevator. I promised you that we would take the stairs together one day, when you were well again. Although I could not keep that promise in this world, I long for the day when you will lead me up an even happier set of stairs - and we will run up and down together to your heart's content, dear friend.
Until then, let me just say thank you for always being by my side - then, now and forever. I could not have had a better dog and I could not have been better loved, dearest Seelenhund. You deserve the highest of heavens.
